With the growing popularity of hip-hop culture, the Recording Academy had no choice but to acknowledge its rise by introducing the first rap category at the Grammys in 1989.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince won the Best Rap Performance award for their hit 'Parents Just Don't Understand,' off their second studio album, 'He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper.'

The duo went up against four other artists for the win, including rap group J. J. Fad's 'Supersonic,' Kool Mo Dee's 'Wild Wild West,' LL Cool J's 'Going Back to Cali' and Salt-n-Pepa's 'Push It.'
