‘American Idol’ Season 12, Episode 22 Recap: Detroit Motown Era Gets Some Shine, Nicki Minaj Wants Perfection
‘American Idol’ is back to its old tricks again with the contestants singing classic tracksfrom Detroit’s Motown era.
The girls and guys both had their moments to shine, taking on memorable songs from the iconic Motown era — favorites like Stevie Wonder‘s ‘For Once in My Life’ and Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tracks of My Tears.’ But as always — in what has become a trend this season — the guys couldn’t hold a candle stick to the girls.
Aside from a few bright moments from the guys last night, with Lazaro Arbos returning to his likable form with a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once in My Life’, and Devin Velez getting his Smokey Robinson on (who mentored the singers) with a smoothed out version of ‘Tracks of My Tears‘, the guys were just embarrassing.
The trio of Lazaro Arbos, Burnell Taylor and Devin Velez failed epicly in their cover of the Four Tops’ ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)‘ — it was just bad. Dudes were forgetting lyrics, missing their cues and stepping over each other as they tried to find some kind of hope in this failed performance. It ended up resembling the train wrecks from Hollywood Week, the kind that gets singers sent home, and this one will.
The group caught the ire of one Nicki Minaj, who had this to say before ordering the three off the stage: “I don’t know what that was, but I’m going to act like I didn’t even see it or hear it!” Hear no evil, see no evil, aye Nicki?
What made matters worse was the group began to turn on each other with Taylor mumbling like he wanted to blame the other singers. However, he didn’t say it with his chest and Velez threw the other singers under the bus, saying something to the effect of he’d learned his parts and tried to cover for them in making for great TV.
It’s not really a surprise as to who may get kicked off the ‘Idol’ boat next after that flameout, but it’s up to America to decide. Tune in for the next episode to see who makes it through and who gets cut.
