Pro Era, ‘PEEP: The Aprocalypse’ – Mixtape Review
Up-and-coming rapper Joey Bada$$ has released his new mixtape 'PEEP: The Aprocalypse' featuring his rap collective Pro Era.
'The Aprocalypse' mixtape features sample-based hip-hop and acrobatic wordplays from Bada$$, CJ, Nyck Caution, Dessy Hinds and Capital STEEZ. Beats were provided by producers Chuck Strangers, Statik Selektah, Thelonius Martin, Tre Eiht Special, Lee Bannon and others.
Standout tracks include the Biz Markie-sampled 'Wrecord Out,' the violins-driven 'F a Rap Critic' and the 'Top Billin'-sampled 'Floristst' featuring Kirk Knight.
Capital STEEZ shines on the jazzy 'Interlude 47' in which he spits lyrical come-ons to a fly honey that catches his eyes. "Let us escape to the universe / But let me show you how to do it first / Sit, patience / Till you feel a tingling sensation / Don't start shakin' / Relax and try to take it," he raps.
PEEP: The Aprocalypse' has an old-school vibe reminiscent of '90s New York rap (i.e., Leaders of the Old School and A Tribe Called Quest) but doesn't sound regressive. For those who don't already know, the collection is a great introduction to Bada$$ and his lyrically adept rap crew Pro Era.
