Who knew Lil Wayne‘s rhymes would be saving lives? A soldier has come forward to share his personal story of how one particular song in the rapper’s catalog helped him see another day.

Seattle’s KOMO 4 News highlights Private First Class Lander Chappell’s bravery in the line of the duty. During his deployment in Afghanistan, the solider was  clearing a road of IED’s — improvised explosive devices — with his favorite song, Weezy’s ‘Tie My Hands,’ off his 2008 album, ‘Tha Carter III,’ playing in his head.

“We were going to clear this road, and we had a thing that shoots grenades down the road,” Chappell explains. “Pressure grenades to put pressure on the ground to blow any pressure plate IED’s. We had a guy who was clearing. I guess he just missed it. And as I came up, I stepped to the right just a little bit and next thing I knew, I was in the air.

“I’m looking at the sky. I don’t wanna look, I don’t wanna look. At the same time, you really want to look because you just want to see. Make sure. But my leg, it was gone.”

A fellow soldier came to Chappell’s side as he was drifting in and out of consciousness and losing blood. To help Lander stay conscious, the soldier urged him to start singing the song that meant most to him — ‘Tie My Hands.’ Lyrics like, “We are at war with the universe, the sky is fallin’ / And the only thing that can save us now is sensitivity and compassion,” hit home for Chappell, considering his role in fighting the war in Afghanistan.

“It got my mind off it and finally the medivac came,” the former star high school football player reveals. “We were still singing. We get on to the medivac. It’s one of the things I really appreciate him doing for me.”

The Alabama native’s badly damaged left leg was saved by military doctors and his right leg is now fitted with a prosthesis. Chappell stands firm in his belief that Lil Wayne’s track, which features Robin Thicke, and his fellow soldier saved his life.
