As a member of the Juice Crew, legendary rapper Big Daddy Kane has provided the world with not only a number of memorable performances but also a collection of great music. However, despite the seven albums that are under his belt, it’s the first LP, ‘Long Live the Kane,’ that’s given some special recognition today as it turns 25.

Released on June 21, 1988, ‘Long Live the Kane’ was Kane’s introduction into the hip-hop world as a solo MC. And considering it was during the “golden age” of the genre, it was the best time for him to do it. Produced by Marley Marl, the album did very well with critics and sold over 500,000 copies — becoming one of only two of Kane’s LPs that went gold.

While it may not have hit the platinum status like some of today’s hip-hop albums, ‘Long Live the Kane’ became an iconic LP that made it to various “Best of” lists including The Source’s Best 100 Albums and Spin’s 20th Best Album of 1988. Nas also names it one of his top 25 albums.

Kane dropped four singles from ‘Long Live the Kane’ — ‘Raw/Word to the Mother (Land),’ ‘Ain’t No Half-Steppin’/Get Into It,’ ‘I’ll Take You There/Wrath of Kane’ and ‘Set It Off/Get Into It.’ Each of the tracks got their props in distinct ways. ‘Ain’t No Half-Steppin” peaked at 53 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart while ‘I’ll Take You There’ went to 73 on that same chart as well as hit No. 21 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. ‘Raw’ and ‘Set It Off’ solidified Kane’s style and lyrics in the rap game, which later influences many well-known spitters.

This album has inspired the work of many rappers who would follow Kane including Brother Ali, the Beastie Boys, RZA, MF Doom and the late Notorious B.I.G. Although his last LP release was in 1998, with ‘Veteranz’ Day,’ Kane is considered an icon in hip-hop and still performs today.
