Happy Birthday, Keke Palmer!
Nickelodeon has churned out a decent amount of talented child actors who would later become music superstars. There's Ariana Grande, Alexandra Shipp and Nick Cannon to name a few. Now it looks like Nickelodeon alumnus Keke Palmer wants to follow in their footsteps. The actress-singer turns 22 years old today (Aug. 26).
Palmer, a Harvey, Ill. native, became a star on Nickelodeon's kids show True Jackson, VP, a sitcom that's arguably one of the last culturally relevant shows to come from the network. The series lasted three years, but she wouldn't have any trouble finding work afterward.
Palmer snagged roles as the titular character in Akeelah and the Bee and a supporting role in Barbershop 2: Back in Business. The former child star had guest roles in Key & Peele, Family Guy and Grey's Anatomy as well. Palmer also became the first black actress to star as Cinderella during a Broadway run.
One of Palmer's most notable role was playing Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas in VH1's TLC biopic, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story. The movie had its flaws but it received a warm reception, especially compared to the criticism directed at Lifetime's two hackneyed attempts at biopics.
Palmer will appear next in the upcoming Barbershop 3 flick and have a voice acting role in the animated movie, Ice Age 5.
Palmer is also a singer. She released three mixtapes and a studio album, but none of them received much attention. The actress-singer recently inked a record deal with Island Records and is currently working on her debut album, which is due out in the fall.
