Anita Baker is one of the most underrated legends to come out of the ballad-heavy 1980s. Her success wasn't instant though. When Baker debuted, there was only word-of-mouth besides basic marketing and after the release of her single 'Angel,' she saw her fan base grow gradually by this avenue.

The LP 'The Songstress' only then began to see real numbers -- Baker had to work for her fans for sure, but she hit a groove in no time earning two Grammy awards with her sophomore album, 'Caught in the Rapture,' and going on to take another six Grammys home as her career progressed. Songs like 'Sweet Love' and 'Giving You the Best That I've Got' still bring the crowds out to amphitheaters everywhere when the weather gets warm.
