People unfamiliar with the south side of Brooklyn may wonder about the folks who claim Coney Island as their neighborhood. It's easy to underestimate the area because as soon as the name is brought up, people think of Nathan's Famous hot hogs, the Cyclone and of course the Wonder Wheel.

But the Island is so much more than that a few blocks past the train terminal. As Torae, a Coney Island native, raps, "It ain't gon' get more hood / Or get more slum / Than 23rd and Mermaid / That's where I'm from / Even though the beach and boardwalk is fun / Come seven blocks past Nathan's you're done..."
