Legendary New Jersey rap group Naughty By Nature has been tapped to headline the 2013 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on June 1. The summertime event boasts a lineup of musicians that may surprise you.

Right off the bat, newly-signed Def Jam artist Trinidad James is the obvious head-scratcher on this bill. It's not that we're surprised, just curious about his stage show. It will be interesting to see if the hip-hop purists in Philly will show him any brotherly love. We'll just have to wait and see (or "just watch" in his case).

Also scheduled to perform are Solange Knowles, Grimes, DJ Premier, Gary Clark, Jr., AraabMUZIK, Hit-Boy, Robert Glasper, How to Dress Well and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, among others.

"The hardest thing is catching acts that are just getting buzz so you can get them on the cusp," Questlove told Billboard. "I thought instantly that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were going to be poppin'. And just on a hunch, I was like, 'Alright.' We hit them and they agreed. Sure enough, after the album came out, they just became unstoppable."

For the past six years, the Roots have held this annual event on the first Saturday of June at Philly's Festival Pier in Penn's Landing. Every year, a special artist gets the honorary treatment of having the Roots back them up. Last year, it was De La Soul and Rakim. Rappers Nas and members of the Wu-Tang Clan were also honorary headliners.

Pre-sale tickets will go on sale Thursday (Jan. 24) at okayplayer.com (you must use the password "afropick") from noon to midnight. Then on Friday (Jan. 25), general admission will be available for purchase at ticketmaster.com.
