Rihanna Wins T-Shirt Case Against Retailer Topshop

Rihanna received some good news today (July 31). The pop superstar won her case against U.K. retail store Topshop for selling unauthorized tees showcasing her image.

The BBC reports that British judge Colin Birss ruled in favor of the singer, who sued the company for selling T-shirts decorated with a photo from her ‘We Found Love’ video.

The judge felt that buyers were most likely duped into purchasing the apparel thinking they were approved by Rihanna.

“The mere sale by a trader of a T-shirt bearing an image of a famous person is not an act of passing off,” he said. “However, I find that Topshop’s sale of this T-shirt was an act of passing off.”

Attorneys for the retailer said it was “surprised, disappointed and perplexed” by the judge’s ruling.

“There was no intention to create an appearance of an endorsement or promotion,” they said in response.

Rihanna is seeking $5 million in damages. The judge did not rule on how much liable damages the singer should receive in the case.

Hopefully, Rihanna can make it two-for-two and appear in a deposition she keeps skipping out on here in the U.S.
