Richard Street Dead, Temptations Singer Dies at 70

The Temptations have suffered another lost within their musical family. Richard Street, who sang with the group from 1971 to the early 1990s, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 27) at a Las Vegas hospital.

Caldin Gill Street, Street’s ex-wife and a member of the ’60s girl group the Velvelettes, told the Detroit News that the crooner died of a pulmonary embolism. He was 70 years old.

“He was really fighting for his life,” said Street’s current wife, Cindy. “He’s a fighter. They’re dancing up there in heaven, him and Damon. I’m in disbelief right now.”

The Temptations lost another member earlier this week. Otis “Damon” Harris, another Tempt member, died Feb. 18 at the age of 62. He suffered from prostate cancer.

Street was born in Detroit on Oct. 5, 1942, and sang as a young man with Temptations members Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin, but didn’t join the storied Motown group until the early 1970s. He’s featured prominently on such Temptations classics as ‘Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone’ and ‘Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are).’

The singer is survived by his wife Cindy, four children — Richard Allen Street Jr. (Ricky), Brandon, Nicole and Brandy — and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are still pending.

We send our condolences to Street’s family and to the surviving members of the Temptations. May he rest in eternal peace.
