Nas, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige Star in ‘Black Nativity’ Trailer
Oscar season is approaching, so it’s time for Hollywood to start rolling out those dramatic flicks. One such movie is ‘Black Nativity,’ Langston Hughes’ famed interpretation of the recount of the Nativity story.
The trailer for the Kasi Lemmons-directed flick has just been released. The film is notable not only because it’s a Langston Hughes adaptation, but because it features a number of well-known R&B and hip-hop artists. The cast includes Nas, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and Tyrese Gibson. All four have received Grammy recognition, but haven’t really received much on the film side — Hudson is the exception.
Nas received dubious film recognition for his robotic acting in 1998’s ‘Belly.’ Hudson, on the other hand, has gotten major praise. She earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2006’s ‘Dreamgirls,’ her film debut. Hudson will also appear in ‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete‘ as a drug-addicted mother, a less glamorous role than ‘Black Nativity.’
The trailer centers around acting appearances from Hudson, with small cameos by Gibson, Nas and Blige.
The film also stars Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker and Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett. Recording artist Jacob Latimore — who once appeared as a 10-year-old performer on the ‘Maury’ show — also stars in his first major film release.
‘Black Nativity’ will hit theaters on Nov. 27.
