Following the success of N.W.A’s biopic Straight Outta Compton, another hip-hop luminary is bringing his own biopic to the big screen. Master P has announced that he’s developing his autobiographical film called Ice Cream Man: King of the South.

According to a press release, Master P (aka Percy Miller) is directing the project himself and will release it through No Limit Forever Films. The movie synopsis reads in part:

Written by Percy Miller, Parde Bridget and Wayne Conley brings alive the real story of young Percy Miller “Master P” and how he became one of the most influential names to Hip Hop. Master P broke major music barriers in the late 90’s with a 80/20 distribution deal that changed the industry of the hip hop world. Master P and his No Limit Record Company INDEPENDENTLY sold 75 million albums world wide in a time when hip-hop was dominantly run by the West and East coast. Master P gave a voice to Southern Hip Hop and exploded the culture, the soul, and the heart of what southern hip-hop is.

The movie's trailer features vintage clips of Master P as a young rapper from the Calliope Projects in New Orleans on the verge of being a major rap star.

Judging by the video, the Ice Cream Man movie looks more like a documentary than a big-budget biopic like Straight Outta Compton. Nevertheless, a film about Master P and how he made No Limit Records the biggest independent rap label of the '90s is worthy of a big-screen treatment.
