LL Cool J, Brad Paisley Discuss Racism on ‘Accidental Racist’

Country-rap collaborations have been done before, so usually they don’t raise too many eyebrows. But the Brad Paisley duet with LL Cool J entitled ‘Accidental Racist’ has to be one of the most eyebrow raising collaborations we’ve heard in a long time.

On the song, Paisley and Mr. Smith discuss some of the problematic issues regarding race in America, more specifically between black and white people.

While the conversation is admirable, the songwriting is downright awful and insincere.

On the chorus, Paisley condescendingly sings, “Cause I’m just a white man / Coming to you from the southland / trying to understand what it’s like not to be / I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done / And it ain’t like you and me can rewrite history.”

LL Cool J tries to console Paisley’s white guilt with his ridiculous guest verse. “If you don’t judge my gold chains / I’ll forget the iron chains,” he raps in one line. Really, LL?

Now don’t get us wrong. We understand that Paisley and LL are dreaming about a world without prejudice. Their hearts are in the right place, unfortunately, it’s not fully realized on this song.

“It’s going to get a lot of attention,” said LL about the song to Anti Music. “I’ll leave it at that ’cause I wanna let him [talk about it]. I don’t wanna spoil his thing on his album but we did something that was really cool.”

If you are still interested, ‘Accidental Racist’ will appear on Brad Paisley’s new album ‘Wheelhouse,’ which will be available on April 9.
