Lil Wayne Talks Quitting High School, Retirement + More on Katie Couric’s Talk Show [Video]

Rapper Lil Wayne talks candidly about his upbringing, prison, health issues and retirement on the season premiere of Katie Couric’s talk show ‘Katie.’

This is Weezy’s second interview with the veteran journalist, whom he affectionately calls “Miss Katie.” The two previously chatted in 2009 when Couric was on CBS’s news program ’60 Minutes.’

In the new interview, Tunechi reveals that it was his mother who told him that he had to quit high school out of fear for his safety.

“I had an album out, I was platinum already, and I was still trying to go to public school,” he explained. “She saw me getting ready for school one day and she saw me putting my gun in my backpack. She said, ‘You gotta bring that to school with you?’ And I remember I asked her, ‘You don’t want me to bring it?’ She thought about it. She said, ‘I do.’

But his mother changed her mind and Weezy dropped out of high school, got his GED, and went on to college.

Elsewhere, Wayne talked about his 2010 prison bid at Rikers Island for drugs and gun possession. The 30-year-old rapper also discussed why he stopped using sizzurp. He credits his mom who eventually persuaded him to stop using sizzurp altogether and get his health in check.

Finally, the Young Money Leader discussed his future plans to retire from the rap game when he turns 35. He hopes to spend more time with his kids when he finally hangs up the mic.

When asked if he would be ready to retire at 35, Wayne responded, “I know I’ll be ready to retire at 35 ’cause I’m so ready to retire now.”
