Kendrick Lamar Performs ‘Swimming Pools’ and ‘Poetic Justice’ on ‘SNL’
Kendrick Lamar made his late-night debut on 'Saturday Night Live' last night (Jan. 26), serving as the musical guest on the Adam Levine-hosted episode. The Compton rapper also showed off a little of his comedic skills as well.
Backed by a six-piece band and a DJ, K.Dot performed his cautionary ode 'Swimming Pools (Drank)' for his first musical number. Lamar was perfectly dressed for the wintery East Coast weather as he wore a black leather hoodie vest, "Compton" beanie, charcoal-colored jeans and black boots. His performance of his platinum-selling single was subtle but effective as he rapped his lyrics about the perils of alcohol abuse.
For his final performance, he dressed down in a T-shirt for an intimate rendition of 'Poetic Justice,' a fan-favorite from his gold-certified album, 'good kid, m.A.A.d. city.' We must also mention that musician Terrace Martin, who produced a few tracks on the LP, backed up Lamar on the saxophone. Unfortunately, Drake couldn't make a guest appearance, so the song ended with just Lamar's two verses.
In an interview with MTV, Lamar hinted that he wanted to do a skit on 'SNL.' Well, he didn't do a skit, but he did make a cameo in a 'SNL' film short with the comedy troupe the Lonely Island. The trio, along with Levine, performed a parody song about the most ubiquitous slogan within the past two years -- YOLO.
Rather than remake Drizzy's hyphy anthem, the group put their own spin on the term "You Only Live Once" by telling viewers to be careful about everything and anything. "YOLO, say No-No / Isolate yourself and go solo," the trio raps.
K.Dot joins in the paranoia by rapping about protecting one's fiscal matters. "Take no chances / Stop freelancing / Invest in your future / Don't dilute your finances," he spits. In the end, the Lonely Island advise to not only live once, but "You Oughta Look Out."
