Kendrick Lamar Gets Interviewed by Erykah Badu, Talks Tour Rider + Top Emcees
During his dream interview, K.Dot and Badu discuss a myriad of topics including the rapper’s Compton upbringing and newfound success since releasing his celebrated album, ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city.’
On the price of fame:
“I always thought money was something just to make me happy. But I’ve learned that I feel better being able to help my folks, ’cause we never had nothing,” said Lamar. So just to see them excited about my career is more of a blessing than me actually having it for myself.”
His secret weapon as a lyricist:
“You know, I studied people I looked up to: Jay-Z, Nas, B.I.G., Pac … But early on, I didn’t really have my own sound,” he said. “I had a passion for it, but me actually rapping the way they rapped is what got me into doing my own thing. I think me being that intricate and studying songs line for line — I probably spent more time listening to albums than writing songs. But I think that gave me all the tricks in terms of wordplay, from how I pronounced my words to the actual delivery.”
The interview gets a little light-hearted when Badu asks Lamar what is his favorite cereal.
“Fruity Pebbles,” he responds. “When people ask for my [tour] rider, they think I’m crazy: Fruity Pebbles, baked chicken, bottle of Hennessy, and some Polo socks.”
Finally, Badu asks the ‘Poetic Justice’ rhymer the proverbial question that all rappers get asked — who are his top five emcees. His answer leads him to reveal his top 10 favorite rappers.
What do you think? Is his list on-point?
