According to De La Soul the “stakes is high” in today’s hip-hop. The trio plans to return to music loud and clear, criticizing the current state of the culture in their first single in nine years.

‘Get Away’ is the first in a series of tracks the group plans to release every month until their upcoming LP drops, according to

Last month they recorded a video for the song, which samples a skit from the Wu-Tang Clan‘s 1997 LP ‘Wu-Tang Forever.’ The clip is set to debut this week.

“I think it’s a great record to re-introduce ourselves with,” said Maseo, De La’s DJ, in a recent Rolling Stone interview. “It’s pretty much reflecting on the state of hip-hop at this moment.”

“Everything is redundant,” he adds in reference to the culture. “Everything sounds the same. No real lyrical content. Everybody’s just doing business, not really creating.”

The group has decided to only release songs building momentum for their new album ‘You’re Welcome.’

Besides a full-length original project, Maseo says they are thinking of creating soundtrack-style records along the lines of Issac Hayes’ ‘Shaft.’ He also admits that De La has been slipping on their contributions to music.

“It’s long overdue. Trust me, man, it disgusts me how long it takes for us to make a record,” Maseo said with a laugh. “Out of all the time we take, we are always happy with the finished product.”

Maybe this will now inspire their Zulu Nation brothers A Tribe Called Quest to get in the studio too.
