Charlie Askew Wows Nicki Minaj With ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ on ‘American Idol’

FOX

Singing Gotye’s ‘Somebody that I Used to Know,’ Charlie Askew found a new fan in Nicki Minaj last night on ‘American Idol.’

His weird, dorky swag aside, Nicki liked the original intro before Charlie’s performance. She was also feeling his look, which included a baggy suit with sneakers. That got the kid extra points in her book saying, that she is “obsessed” with him.

What really made this performance work was the fact that Charlie had a personal connection to the song as its content is something that he’s currently living. That made the whole thing that much easier.

Being able to connect to your material on a personal level will always connect you to the audience, and that’s what Charlie needed to do here, and he did it well.
