‘American Idol’ Season 12, Episode 28 Recap: Performances Dedicated to Boston Bombing Victims

Ryan Seacrest dedicated last night’s ‘American Idol’ show to the victims of the Boston bombing. “With heavy hearts, we are going to put on the best show for you tonight,” he said.

For Ladies’ Night, the Top 5 hopefuls gave two performances: the first, a song from the year they were born and the second, a song from an iconic diva. The night’s performances were not particularly memorable but, both Amber Holcomb and Candice Glover braved the stage to sing Mariah Carey songs in front of the legend.

Candice, who was born on Nov. 22, 1989, kicked off the night with a jazzy, sultry version of Paula Abdul’s ‘Straight Up.’ Even though the judges raved about it, with Nicki Minaj going so far as to call it “amazing,” it felt like a preclude to a better performance.

Angie Miller dedicated her performance of ‘Ill Stand by You’ to her hometown of Boston, where detonated bombs recently injured hundreds and killed three. Although it initially felt like something from a Disney movie, the ending was very strong and the judges agreed that “Angie belongs behind her piano.”

Amber took a big risk and sang Mariah’s cover of ‘Without You’ — she received negative feedback from Nicki Minaj, who simply said, “I wasn’t impressed.” Luckily, her sultry rendition of Barbra Streisand’s ‘What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life’ may have saved her from elimination.
