‘American Idol’ Season 12, Episode 23 Recap: Mariah Carey Breaks Down Over Devin Velez’s Elimination

After the last episode of ‘American Idol,’ where the men butchered their group performance of ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch),’ it was no surprise that they were all sent to the bottom three. But it wouldn’t be a results show without tons of performances and pointless fillers.

The ‘Idol’ group performed Bob Seger’s ‘Old Time Rock N’ Roll,’ and the women held the performance down whereas the men were still unable to recover from their last group massacre of a performance.

With Lazaro Arbos, Burnell Taylor and Devin Velez in the bottom three, Jimmy Iovine predicted that this episode would be Lazaro’s last one. But it was Devin who received the least amount of votes.

He sung his farewell anthem and Mariah Carey cried the moment they mentioned his name. Keith Urban and Randy Jackson deliberated on whether or not to keep Devin on the show. Carey then cried some more (by the way, she’s a very pretty crier). Even with the audience chanting “safe,” all the running mascara Mariah sported was not enough to keep Devin around.

Unfortunately, he was eliminated.
