Afrika Bambaataa, a hip-hop icon and the driving force behind the Universal Zulu Nation, turns 56 years old today.

The DJ has also recovered from a stabbing attack a few weeks ago, an incident that was confirmed by other members of the Zulu Nation, according to AllHipHop.com.

Those close to him say that Bambaataa is doing fine right now, but there were also rumors surrounding the incident that put Bambaataa's name in a bad light.

Ernie Paniccioli, a hip-hop photographer, suggested that this may stem from the Zulu Nation's public opposition to Rick Ross' controversial date rape lyrics in 'U.O.E.N.O.'

“It is BS, to hell with anyone who defames a man who has devoted his life to Peace and dignity and who has been a beacon to generations of our youth,” he said.

Paniccioli continued, “I have know Bam for 35 years on this Earth and can vouch for him as a man, as a human being and as a mighty leader and yes even as an Icon. I will defend him with every breathe I have in me. I can bear witness to his spirit and his warmth and his leadership.”

Thought wikipedia.com lists his born day as April 19, sources close to Afrika Bambaataa say his birthday is in fact today.

We're glad the O.G. is doing fine and hope he's having a happy 56th birthday.
