In the past few years, Melanie Fiona went from being a newbie R&B singer who was trying to make it to a two-time Grammy winner. Not too bad for this 29-year-old straight out of Canada.

She started her career in a girl group but then joined The Renaissance, where Drake was already a member. After playing the Toronto club scene, she was signed as a solo artist to SRC Records and Universal Motown in 2007. She joined Kanye West on tour and met Jay-Z, who signed her to a management deal with Roc Nation.

Releasing 'The Bridge' in 2009, her single, 'It Kills Me,'was at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B/Rap Songs for 10 weeks and nabbed a Grammy nod for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance 2011. While she didn't win that year, she did win two Grammys -- Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song -- for 'Fool for You', the song she did with Cee Lo Green.

Fiona released her second album, 'The MF Life' in 2012. In February, she covered 'One Moment in Time' for Billboard to pay tribute to the death anniversary of the late Whitney Houston. Not just anyone can honor an icon like that and do it with style and grace.
