10 Things You Didn’t Know About Brian McKnight
Today (June 5) is Brian McKnight's birthday. At 44, the R&B singer has churned out some of music's most memorable ballads including 'Back at One,' 'One Last Time' and 'Anytime.' He recently released his 15th studio effort, 'More Than Words,' in April and just wrapped up a tour to promote the LP last month, continuing a career that spans over two decades.
In honor of his birthday, TheDrop.fm is revealing some information about the 'If You're Ready to Learn' crooner that you may not have been privy to before. Here's 10 Things You Didn't Know About Brian McKnight.
Brian McKnight was a contestant on the second season of 'The Celebrity Apprentice.' He was fired in the eighth episode of that season. Unfortunately, he encountered issues while serving as project manager during that week's challenge; he also showed a lack of dedication for winning.
He knows how to woo a lady with his buttery voice and heartwarming lyrics and apparently also knows how to pen a tune about getting down and dirty between the sheets. Brian, along with his sons Niko and Brian Jr., wrote and filmed a rap song that paid homage to XXX site, YouPorn.
It's been said that the acoustics in the bathroom are some of the best a singer can get at home -- if he or she doesn't have a personal studio. But McKnight takes it a step further when he admitted to writing songs while on the toilet. "I used to keep a guitar in my bathroom because I can get a lot done in there," he said during an interview. "I spend a lot of time in there."
Although he has received 16 Grammy nominations, Brian McKnight has never taken home a golden gramophone.
Brian McKnight amped up the romance when he decided to propose to his longtime girlfriend onstage during a show he did in Hawaii on Feb. 15, 2010. "I promised myself I would never do it again, but I found the right girl, y'all," he said before popping the question.
Although Brian McKnight might not have had a hand in doing this, his hit single, 'Back at One,' was given the country music treatment in 1999. Mark Wills covered the track for his album, 'Permanently,' and the rendition landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Despite his busy music career, Brian McKnight also prided himself as a talk show host in 2009. Teaming up with comedic actress Kym Whitley, the two put on 'The Brian McKnight Show' where they did interviews, comedy segments and live performances. We're sure Brian sang on his show a couple of times too.
In 2007, McKnight flexed his acting muscles when he joined the cast of 'Chicago.' He played the role of criminal lawyer Billy Flynn during his six-week gig.
A year after his self-titled debut LP released, McKnight teamed up with Vanessa Williams on 'Love Is,' a track that appeared exclusively on the 'Beverly Hills 90210' soundtrack. The song not only peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard singles chart, but it was also McKnight's first big hit.
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of 'U-Turn,' McKnight's seventh studio album. While this is a memorable moment for McKnight's career, it's also a bittersweet one. This is because the album was recorded while McKnight was going through a divorce from his first wife.
